We have very good news! This week, President Joe Biden announced a policy of protection from deportation for spouses (husbands or wives) of U.S. citizens. This policy will eliminate the threat of deportation for thousands of people married to U.S. citizens and bring us closer to the goal of all immigrants having their papers in the U.S. WITHOUT LEAVING!
The White House has detailed that the program will allow about 490,000 undocumented immigrants to apply for a temporary stay in the country. This measure will protect them from deportation and grant them work permits if they have lived in the United States for at least 10 years. In addition, about 50,000 non-citizen children under the age of 21, whose parents are married to U.S. citizens, will also benefit from this policy.
Who will be eligible for this protection?
They have not yet confirmed all the specific details, but for the time being, this law could benefit immigrants who:
- Have lived in the United States for 10 years or more, counted from June 17, 2024.
- Are legally married to a U.S. citizen.
- They have not had certain problems in the past.
This program will allow undocumented immigrants to apply for permanent residency without having to leave the country.
Program benefits
The program will not only protect spouses of U.S. citizens from deportation, but will also offer them work permits for up to three years. Families will be able to stay together in the United States while applying for permanent residency!
