In recent days, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, accompanied by Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, met in Panama with ministers from more than twenty Latin American countries to exchange proposals and address the issue of irregular migration of Latin Americans to the United States.

Proposals for a migration agreement

Blinken said that during the Summit of the Americas convened by U.S. President Joe Biden in Los Angeles June 6-10 to “promote democracy and isolate authoritarian governments in the region,” work is expected to continue and principles for a joint response to regional migration and displacement are expected to be established.

“The United States seeks to reach with Latin American countries a “firm” agreement on migration” announced the Secretary of State before leaving Panama.

Regional concerns about the agreement

Mayorkas, for his part, said that the meeting was a sign of concern on the part of all the countries of the region that were there, to finally find an optimal response to irregular migration in the region.

Expectations for the next Summit of the Americas

It is expected that an immigration agreement between Latin American countries and the United States will be reached at the next Summit of the Americas.
